Library Assistant - Babcock Library, Ashford

Part-Time Library Assistant - Babcock Library, Ashford, CT. General Description: Performs a variety of library circulation, technical, and administrative procedures. The work requires that the employee have good knowledge, skill and ability in every phase of library support functions. Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Library Director.
     Examples of Duties: Performs all circulation desk duties using computerized system. Performs all opening/closing procedures in work area/public areas. Oversees book processing. Resolves routine problems in technical procedures. Performs a variety of library clerical tasks, as assigned. Notifies patrons about reserved materials. Performs basic reference work or refers it to Librarian. Assists patrons in locating materials through OPAC or ILL. Performs elementary descriptive cataloging using automated bibliographic database. Process magazines for circulation. Assists with library programs and displays; registration, signs, crafts, book lists, etc. Assists with book orders. Prepares, repairs, and withdraws, materials. Shelves materials/reads shelves. Performs other duties designated by Library Director.
     Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of basic library methods, techniques and procedures. Knowledge of standard office/ library machines. Knowledge of automated systems as they apply to book processing. Some knowledge of reader interest levels. Ability in oral and written communications. Ability to maintain library records and carry out library procedures. Attention to detail.
     Qualifications: A degree from a recognized institution in library science, technology, or a related field plus some library experience, OR, an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires good interpersonal skills, communications skills, and the desire to provide excellent customer service. Solid writing and computer skills are also required.
