Children’s Librarian

Russell LibraryMiddletown CT. Russell Library is looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and engaging Children’s Librarian for busy Children’s Services, to assist children, parents, teachers and students in the use of library materials, equipment and resources, and conduct programs for pre-school and school-age children.  The position reports to the Head of Children’s Services, but exercises considerable independence in carrying out the duties. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): Conceives, plans and implements programs and services for families, children and students; including summer reading programming, story hours, library tours, and related events. Provides children’s reference and readers advisory services to children, teens and adults. Provides literacy-based programming to state licensed day cares and/or preschools. Assists adults, children and students to locate information or guide them to source materials. Assists patrons in use of computers and other technology for informational, recreational or educational purposes. Plans, arranges and presents instructional, educational and recreational programs for children, alone or in partnership with other library staff, school librarians, teachers, parents’ groups, childcare providers and community organizations.  Performs special assignments as needed and directed by the Department Head. Participates in the development and maintenance of Children’s Services collections of books, periodicals, audio-visual materials and technological devices. Participates in grant writing and grant fulfillment opportunities. Works regular evening and weekend shifts. Examples of incidental duties: Presents oral and written reports in a clear and understandable way. Actively participates in professional development opportunities and continuing education. Other duties as required. General qualifications:  An MLS is required.  One year of professional library experience or other work with children is desired.  You will be part of a team, so working well with others is critical.  It will be equally important to be motivated and self-directed enough to work without close supervision.  And most importantly, you have to be passionate about serving children. FY16 salary range starts at $49,652 (Grade 7, Promotional to Grade 8) 35 hours a week; March 2016 start date.
