Seeking a Library Director to lead our public library. This is an excellent opportunity for a librarian
with public library administration experience.
The Library Director plans, organizes, directs and manages all aspects
of library service including the supervision of our staff. The library is several years into the
planning of a significant expansion and renovation. We are currently in the early stages of a
capital campaign and preparing for public meetings. This position represents an excellent
opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated and results-oriented individual to
make an impact on a small close-knit community.
Primary
Responsibilities
Planning and Policy Making
Participates in an ongoing planning process with the Library
Board
Administers broad policies established by the Library
Board
Prepares monthly and annual reports for the Library Board
Attends all meetings of the Library Board and other
relevant town meetings
Assures management responsibility for effective
functioning of library
Plans and proposes changes in library information
technology (IT) systems
Fiscal Management
Prepares annual budget in cooperation with the Library
Board
Administers annual budget
Cooperates with other town departments to ensure
effective use of resources
Researches and pursues grant proposals to fund new or
supplementary programs and services
Personnel Management
Manages staff and coordinates staff functions
Coordinates and manages suppliers, including IT services,
to ensure proper functioning of library
Provides leadership in establishing working relationships
and encourages creativity among library staff
Program Management
Directs daily operations of library
Coordinates selection, ordering and processing of library
materials including online databases and services
Evaluates existing collection and supervises the turnover
of materials
Evaluates the effectiveness of library services in light
of community needs and interests
Cooperates with local schools in obtaining materials for
special assignments and projects
Keeps current with library trends and operations
Attends Friend’s meetings to request program funding and
coordinate events with library schedule and staff.
Library Management
Manages the physical building and coordinates with town
departments on the upkeep and maintenance of the library
Manages IT suppliers and ensures operation of computer
network
Assumes responsibility for library space and furnishings
Assumes responsibility for planning, scheduling and organizing
community room use
Responds to building emergencies
Public Relations
Represents library at community and group meetings
Promotes the use of the library and its services to the
community
Minimum Requirements
Graduate degree in Library & Information Science (MLS or
equivalent) from an ALA accredited program. Five (5) or more years of
experience in public library administration. Demonstrates:
the ability to effectively communicate, both orally and
in writing, to a variety of audiences
competence in using and implementing current technologies
used in library operations
ability organize
ability to meet deadlines
creative approaches to the development of new services
Commitment to responsive and innovative service is essential.
The position is a 35 hour work week and offers a hiring
salary range of $48,000-54,000 (with placement dependent upon experience and
