Assistant Director/Children’s Librarian - Acton Public Library, Old Saybrook. Job Summary: Assists and relieves Library Director in all administrative matters. Plans, organizes and supervises library program for pre-school, elementary and young adult library users. Performs professional library services in assisting library patrons in the selection and use of library materials. Supervision Received: Supervised by Library Director. Supervision Exercised: Children’s Room Aides; Supervises other Library staff in Director’s absence. Plans work according to established library schedule and standard procedure. Reports monthly to Director. Assists Library Director in short and long range planning of all library services, including participation in annual budget preparation. Establishes task priorities within children’s unit. Administers approved children’s unit budget. Develops and conducts programs for children and young adults to encourage reading, viewing and listening skills, and appropriate use of library facilities and materials. Plans and organizes special children’s programs. Organizes and conducts story telling programs for pre-school children. Prepares brochures, news releases, bulletins, posters, website updates and other public relations materials to promote library services. Examines professional publications and other sources for the selection of books, periodicals and related materials. Helps build a collection of books, periodicals and communication materials through consultation with the Library Director, staff members, and own selections. Assembles and arranges displays of books and materials. Promotes interest in the library as a community resource by visiting, speaking, and coordinating activities with school, civic, cultural and social organizations. Coordinates programs and activities with school librarians, teachers, parents’ groups, and community organizations. Prepares reading list for school and community distribution. Attends meetings and participates in professional library organizations. Maintains working knowledge of developments in library services and related technology. Performs general library work as needed. Qualifications: Master of Library Science Degree; Minimum of three years of progressively responsible library experience, including two years as supervisor of a library division. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Ability to apply principles of library science to solve practical problems; A working knowledge of computer applications for library services (LION library experience preferred); Ability to stay current in technology; Strong written and oral communication skills; Ability to work effectively with library staff and patrons. Salary/Hours: This is a 40 hour per week full time position under the collective bargaining agreement between the Town of Old Saybrook and Local 818 of Council #4 (AFSCME). Annual salary for this position under the current union contract is in the range of $50,090 to $57,097 dependent on experience.
