Reference/Young Adult Librarian - Acton Public Library, Old Saybrook. Job Summary: Provides reference and reader’s advisory to patrons. Plans and directs young adult books, materials and programs. Performs increasingly responsible and varied clerical administrative work in issuing, receiving and circulating library books and materials; assists patrons in using library services and facilities. Supervision Received: Supervised by Library Director. Supervision Exercised: N/A. Examples of Primary Duties: (Note: This section is intended only as illustrations of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is related or a logical assignment.) Receives oral or written instructions from the Director or designee. Plans work according to established procedures and prioritizes tasks within work assignment. Reports work accomplished to Director. Performs reference desk tasks; Receives and responds to general and specific information requests by telephone, email or in writing; Mediates patrons’ computer difficulties. Oversees the Young Adult patrons’ area for reference services and supervisory purposes. Charges and discharges library books, materials and equipment; inspects returned books, materials and equipment for damage; reserves books and materials. Assists patrons applying for library cards; Processes library card applications. Examines professional publications and other sources for selection of books, periodicals and other materials. Recommends to Director new acquisitions and withdrawals to library collection, particularly the Young Adult and reference areas. Qualifications: Master of Library Science Degree; Minimum of two years of library experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Ability to provide reader’s advisory to patrons; Strong computer and keyboarding skills necessary; Ability to comprehend patron’s needs quickly and accurately; Strong written and oral communication skills; Ability to acquire a working knowledge of regulations and procedures pertaining to library responsibilities; Ability to maintain accurate files and records; Ability to perform accurate mathematical computations; Ability to deal cooperatively with others. Salary/Hours: This is a 25 hour per week part time position. It is a Wage Grade 9 hourly position under the collective bargaining agreement between the Town of Old Saybrook and Local 1303-278 of Council #4 (AFSCME).
